Watch the video of me playing Together first:
Together was commissioned by Marimbafest Australia for the Marimbafest 2022 solo
marimba and percussion ensemble competition in July 2022. It was the 2022 Compulsory
Work that was performed by the A CLASS Solo Finalists for the 2022 competition, who were
Rani Fung (1st Prize, Hong Kong), Jonathan Ye (2nd Prize, USA) and Sebastian Malmquist
(3rd Prize, Sweden).
Together was written with the purpose of this edition of Marimbafest, where participants
joined both in-person and online to come together for the common purpose of making
music, learning new things and making new friends from around the world. With the 2022
edition welcoming participants from all over Australia, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan
and the United States, the Marimbafest family continues to grow and represent percussionists coming together to share their music, uniting together after a difficult time with COVID and the mass lockdowns it brought across the world.
Together is similar to Hope, in that the melodic material is simple and accompaniment kept light for most of the work, except for the final octave section. To serve its purpose as a compulsory work and reinforce the idea of many marimba influences coming 'together', Together uses many advanced marimba techniques that appear at different sections, including one-handed rolls, arpeggiation, octaves with large distances and even a crosshanded roll at the very end.
Despite these techniques, Together still makes for a simple and spacious canvas for the performer to showcase their voicing and personality.
Together requires a 4.3 octave marimba. You will receive one (1) PDF file with the score.
